The true monsters of our era are the Wall Street hypesters, the hedge fund managers, and the liars and frauds.
And as Cliffyb and Godfrey are ultimately working for their bottom line, they can't afford the higher ideals, nor epic story.
And thus they become the epic story--tragic figures--the very monsters that their video games portray on a superficial level, but never render on a deeper level.
