Hollywood Hypesters & GOW Fanboys

The Stuart Beattie/Wyck Godfrey/Cliffyb triumverate is Hollywood's death star.

In his poetics, Aristotle put story/plot first, and spectacle close to last.

Gears of War has no deep, profound, epic story.
GOW is not 300.
GOW is not The Lord of The Rings.

GOW relies on intimidation and hype from Cliffyb(Microsoft) and Godfrey/Beattie.

Beattie elaborates:

"The perception of videogames in Hollywood is changing slowly," said Beattie. "Hollywood likes to do what's proven. They've already proved that books work, and plays can work, and recently that comic books can work. But they've yet to have a film be as successful as say Spider-Man, that's based on a videogame. We had the same thing with Pirates of the Caribbean. They didn't want to base a film from a theme park ride. But now that it's done and it's been successful they're looking for what other theme park rides could possibly work as films." --http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=137868

OMFG--gone forever are the days of making movies based on story--based on Shakespeare and Melville, but now the snarky-snark Godfrey/CliffyB/Beattie machine is going to make movies based on theme park rides.

Shoot me now. Chainsaw me. Just get it over with.

Stuart Beattie states,

"While there are more and more videogame movies being made because there are more and more videogames being made, there still hasn't been that one that has hit it out of the park yet," said Beattie. "At the moment, I would say the perception of videogame movies in Hollywood is: they are interested, they're intrigued, but they're still not completely sure if it can actually work."

That is because video games have no story, and to top it off, fanboys like Godfrey and CliffyB detest story. That is why you don't hear them quoting books. That is why they never talk about Shakespeare, Dante, Homer, and Melville. Instead they talk about superficial, characterless Fanboy fluff--Optimus Prime and Master Chief.

I have no idea why New Line considers Godfrey a good investment--he has never written a book. His movies aren't art, and they don't make all that much bank:

Admit it people--the story in gears sucked.

If New Line wants to lose money, there is no better investment than Wyck Godfrey/Beattie/CliffyB. Perhaps they can hire twenty or thirty writers for the project--that will make it a success, just as J.R.R. Tolkien hired thirty writers to finish LOTR.
