The fanboys are calling out GOW for what it is--a complete, epic lack of art and story.
Wyck Godfrey & Marty Bowen have rotten track record & gears of war has no story:

I'm curious how they are going to make a story from a game with a complete lack of anything that even looks like a plot, even out of the corner of your eye when you squinting."

"JPan
why do they make movies of games with inexistant story line and no character development? First Doom now Gears? Big exchangable space marines with the charisma of a door knob kill hellish creatures to save the world. Surprise.
How about a Half-Life movie. I think there would be potential. Or for all I care a Halo movie. Great soundtrack confirmed and I love to watch the trailers. An Uncharted movie would be fun. The game was almost a movie. Assassin's would be cool. But Gears..."

"While freakin' awesome, Legendary Pictures also has "Superman Returns" under it's belt...
Just thought I'd remind everybody..."

Let's be honest here:
Has there EVER been a good movie based on a videogame?
Super Mario Bros.
Mortal Kombat (both)
Street Fighter
Wing Commander
Double Dragon
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (and it's sequel!)
Final Fantasy (I really wanted to like this movie, but it sucked)
Anything by Uwe Boll
Doom
Dead or Alive
Hitman
I'm sure I could go on, but that would be like beating a dead 360 owner.

"Why!!!!!
Gears of War barely has a story it is a stupid, cliché ridden (but fun) action game. Sure action movies get made but you actually need something approaching a story for it to work, if it does get made it will be a stinker no doubt.

“It’s like with our games, you can have it right or have it right now,” said Epic Games head Mark Rein. “We want to get it right. There’s no timetable for us. We just want to make as good a movie as we can, and we think (Wiseman’s) the guy who will do it.”
How many screenplays/novels/films has Mark Rein directed/written?
Wired reports:

"Len Wiseman almost totally destroyed the Die Hard franchise by directing a watered down, castrated version of a series that defined the idea of adolescent "every man" fantasies via the exploits of one John McClane.
I can't quite figure out if this is a brilliant combination or a harbinger of the worst game-to-film adaptation yet, but I feel pretty confident saying it'll have both explosions and women with copious breasts."
The Gate reports:
http://www.thegate.ca/blog/the-gate/01515/good-news-or-bad-len-wiseman-to-direct-gears-of-war/
"First of all, New Line is set to make the film, which is technically an offshoot of Warner Bros. Yes, that’s the same New Line that brought us that gem of film known as Blade: Trinity and Freddy vs. Jason. They’re a big studio, big enough to do this film, but as a production company they’re not known for producing quality action films, and their horror these days tends toward over-produced rather than clever."
"I give a lot of credit to Cliff Bleszinski from Epic, who commented in the article and points out that all we really need is for someone to take the material seriously and do it right. He points out in the piece that Disney made a franchise out of theme park ride, and I’ll admit to liking 2 1/2 of the 3 films they made there."

Yes--take the theme park ride of GOW seriously, and the movie will be great, as all higher art derives from theme park rides.
http://xboxer.tv/2008/06/gears_of_war_movie_gets_worryi.html reports "Gears of War movie gets worryingly low-grade director and writer combo.
Yes, the Len Wiseman! The Len Wiseman of Underworld fame. The Len Wiseman of Underworld II fame. And the Len Wiseman of Die Hard 4.0 fame. Excited yet? Probably not.
The original Gears script - written by Pirates of the Caribbean man Stuart Beattie - is being reworked by a bloke called Chris Morgan, who was responsible (to blame) for The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. Does that make things better or worse? Probably worse.
Expect very dumb, medium-budget action with an extremely high "HOLY SHIT!" quota to appear by summer 2009 at the earliest." --http://xboxer.tv/2008/06/gears_of_war_movie_gets_worryi.html
We look forward to the resounding moviesuck.
